The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is becoming even more threatening to marine life as the plastics photodegrade to tiny pieces. These pieces of plastic are constantly being found in the stomachs of birds and fish, which leaves them with full stomach and nonexistant nutrients. These animals simply die becasue of starvation. Besides harming these animals, humans are also impacted by the plastic waste becasue we consume the fish. These harmful plastics can cause tumors and other cancers to consumers. It is still gets worse as there are several species that can go extinct due to the plastic waste being carried by these ocean gyres. Of course, there is a bright side to this situation as well. There are several methods tha are being deveoloped for the sake of removing the plastic waste and many actions that reduce the pullotion in the first place.
So what do I think? Well, I am sad to see some of these images because some of them were outright disturbing. This article definitly changed my perspective because now I realize that this issue was understated. It is concerning, but there are still actions implemented and new methods developing which is promising for now. If things go according to plan, there is a possiblity of removing about 99 percent of the plastic in the oceans.
