| Louisiana received rainfall levels as high as 31 inches in 15 hours. The storm, which gained its strength from the gulf, continued for a week and it has been estimated 6,900,000,000,000 gallons of rainall in one week. All the rainfall ended up in the rivers which caused massive flooding that can possible cost 30 millions dollars in damages. The Amite river, known for flooding, contained water levels about six feet(1.82 meters) more than the average levels. The most recent death toll is 13 people. Several thousands of homes have been damage ( about 40000) and more than 80000 people have been evacuated. 7000 people have been living in emergency shelter and others are lacking power or protection from the weather. The river levels are expected to fall; however, it will still remain in the flooding stages. It is estimated that the flood will last for few more days. I find this issue to be extremely important because the flooding can cause major environmental impacts such as washing broken down homes and debris to the gulf. The floods can loosen the soil enough to cause landslides and prevent the growth of crops. There is not much we can do to solve the issue of the river flooding because Louisiana is under the sea level. The only thing we can do is to volunteer to help in the red cross or send aid. http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/18/us/louisiana-flooding/ |
