California's governor, Mr. Jerry Brown, signed the legislation titled SB 32 which is intended to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in this state. This legislation set a target of having emission levels that are approximately 40 percent below the emissions levels during 1990. California is taking an aggressive steps toward accomplishing this goals. Some of the methods implemented to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases include increasing the use of solar power, handing out subsidies to allow people to purchase electric cars, and encouraging denser communities to use public transits. The next step is to convinced big companies to support this legislation and most likely force some restrictions on farmers.
So why does this matter? locally, it can affect everyone one of us because we live in an agriculture community. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can change transportation, the production of food, the type of energy we use, can lead to increase in taxes, and even increases the price of some items. It sounds horrible, but I see the extra spending being put to great use such as maintaining the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere low. I live in the central valley which is has one of the worst air qualities in the nation, which means anything that improves that is a blessing. California can be an example to other states and even the world, but getting there is surely going to be challenging.
