Activists protested the movement of tar-sands oil from Canada into the U.S. by targeting 5 pipelines in Minnesota. Two pipeline valves, owned by enbridge, near Clearbrook in northwestern Minnesota were tampered with. There was no damage caused to the pipes because the environmental activists simply turned the emergency stop valves. The group called "Climate Direct Action" decided to act because the continuous use of crude oil is polluting the environment and that, to them, is considered an emergency.
This is important because the group would not have acted as it did if their political representatives took the proper actions. Petitions and legal avenues are not yielding results, which shows the ignorance about environmental protection. We keep using the most polluting sources of fuel even though there is abundant technology that allows the use of renewable resources. Several activist groups are taking matters in their own hands and are continuing the fight. I believe that we should follow in their footsteps (not causing issues) and using legal method to protect the environment. Taking action is especially necessary in Turlock because we have one of the worst air qualities in the nation.
