After continuous public anger, Beijing officials finally cracked up and decided to create new environmental laws that are going to be enforced by the new environmental police. The built up anger was caused by the constant red and orange smog alerts across major cities. These alerts shut down schools, factories, transportation along with forcing people to stay indoors. Cai Qi, governor of Beijing, blamed the poor air quality on major factories and the illegal burning of wood and garbage. The reduction of pollution will be conducted by shutting down older factories that produce tremendous amounts of pollution and upgrading thousands to more efficient energy sources.
I feel that this is a great step towards healthier living conditions for the people of China because the policies intend to reduce the consumption of coal by 30%. I am glad the official are taking action, but I'm skeptical whether the goal will be reached. In my eyes, the goal seems to be set too high because China is a developing country that is going through industrialization phase and any slowing of production can be detrimental.
