The yellow-faced bees, which are native to the state of Hawaii, are finally getting the attention they deserve. The population of this species has been drastically declining for the past several years and are now on the verge of extinction. Due to this decline, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed seven types of bees to the endangered species list. The reason is for this decline, without any surprise, are human activities. Constant destruction and fragmentation of habitats along with the use of harmful pesticides are at the top of the list. One other cause is the lack of genetic diversity because the constant declining population is limiting the genetic code for the future generations.
So why do bees matter? the first reason is that they are natural pollinators to the vegetation around us. They are the reason our food is grown with relative ease. We already are struggling to feed a growing nation and with bees going extinct that task simply becomes much more demanding. Personally, I find it shocking that bees are on the endangered species list because I always thought that we can take care of our valuable resources. In the end, I am glad (also worried) that they are on the endangered list because now they are protected by the law.
